The largest German bank, Deutsche Bank, is awaiting regulatory approval to launch a digital asset custody solution for institutional clients and corporations in Europe.
Deutsche Bank plans to launch its offering for its first clients this year, subject to the completion of the applicable regulatory period, the bank announced on Wednesday.
The bank plans to initially support bitcoin, ethereum, and selected stablecoins, including USDC, EURC, and EURAU. It also plans to later include support for tokenized financial instruments.
Deutsche Bank is one of the institutions listed by the Financial Stability Board as globally systemically important banks.
This development marks the latest attempt by the German institution in the crypto sector, confirming earlier reports that it is developing cryptocurrency custody services. In June, Sabih Behzad, head of digital assets at Deutsche Bank, revealed that the bank is considering entering the stablecoin market, including issuing its own token.
The bank expects to receive a license for custody offerings in October, under the EU’s framework for crypto asset markets (MiCA).
German Banks Sign Partnerships to Provide Crypto Services
The impetus for crypto services is expected to accelerate after MiCA fully came into effect on July 1.
Deutsche Bank first revealed plans to launch a cryptocurrency custody solution in 2023, as part of a partnership with Taurus, shortly after applying for a digital asset custody license in Germany.
Other German banks are also offering similar solutions. In April 2024, the largest German state bank, Landesbank Baden-Württemberg, began offering cryptocurrency custody solutions after partnering with Austrian Bitpanda for their institutional custody platform.
In December 2025, DZ Bank announced that it had received approval from the German regulator BaFin under MiCA to manage its meinKrypto platform.
