Hunter Biden is entering the crypto world, monetizing his own scandal. The son of former President Joe Biden plans to launch a meme coin called LAPTOP on September 9, based on yesterday’s announcement on X.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Hunter Biden’s meme token will trade on Base, a faster and cheaper blockchain built on Ethereum, created by Coinbase in 2023.
The name is not subtle. LAPTOP refers to a laptop that a repair shop in Delaware returned in 2019, the contents of which were published by the New York Post weeks before the 2020 election, sparking a controversy that has occupied American politics for years. The Journal reports that Biden is personally part of the founding team, rather than having lent his name to someone else’s project.
LAPTOP will create a total of one billion tokens. The founders, including Biden, retain 30 percent of that supply, although it remains locked for six months and then gradually unlocks over two years; the vesting schedule or delayed issuance mechanism is designed to prevent insiders from dumping tokens at launch.
Of the total supply, 20 percent of the LAPTOP offering will cover charitable donations, liquidity, and payments to exchange partners and market makers, plus accounting and legal costs.
