At today’s press conference at the city administration, the Mayor of the City of Zagreb Tomislav Tomašević announced the realization of one of the most important infrastructure projects in the last few decades – the construction of the first new bridge in western Zagreb after 45 years, and only the third over the Sava River with a tram line in the entire city.
– The estimated value of the project is 140 million euros excluding VAT. Property-legal relations are almost completely resolved, and the final appearance of the bridge is expected in the fall. This is a strategically key intervention that will enable the expansion of the tram network, including traffic connection with the future National Children’s and University Hospital in Blato – emphasized Mayor Tomašević.
The bridge will be 625 meters long and 38 meters wide with four traffic lanes, a tram line, pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, and will connect Trešnjevka – south and Novi Zagreb – west in the corridor of the extended Vrapčanska Street. An evaluation panel has been appointed, consisting of ten members, all top experts in the fields of construction, traffic, architecture, and urban planning, who will ensure that Zagreb receives a bridge that is not only functional but also a recognizable symbol of the city.
The next steps include the implementation of the competition and the negotiation process for the development of the conceptual design, obtaining the location permit, and then realization through the ‘design & build’ model. The start of construction is expected in mid-2028.
