Croatia is gaining a new, strategically important railway connection with the Central European market. The railway operator Baltic Rail has announced the launch of a new intermodal rail service that will directly connect Poland with Luka Rijeka, further strengthening the role of the Rijeka port on the European logistics map.

The first train on the new line is expected to depart, according to announcements, this week, and it is the only direct intermodal service between Poland and Rijeka. This gives Rijeka an equal status in relation to existing routes to northern Adriatic ports, primarily Koper, to which this service represents a direct alternative.

The new Rijeka line will operate through key inland terminals in Wrocław, Katowice, and Pasków, ensuring efficient and reliable cargo flow between the Polish market and the Adriatic. The service is designed flexibly, with regular departures tailored to user needs and aligned with maritime connections of the Rijeka port.

For the Croatian economy, this announcement is of particular importance as it confirms the growing competitiveness of Rijeka as an entry port for Central Europe. In the context of investments in port and railway infrastructure, the new intermodal line further solidifies Croatia’s position as a logistics corridor between the Adriatic and the European Union market with a pronounced growth in commodity flows.

At the same time, the strong growth of intermodal transport in Poland opens additional space for increasing cargo volumes to the Adriatic, and Rijeka is positioning itself with this service as a serious alternative to the previously dominant routes.

Baltic Rail is a container train operator owned by Rail World Group, a holding company operating in North America and Europe. It was established in 2008 and has been operating trains in the Baltic-Adriatic railway corridor since 2011.
