Every fifth Croatian has a side job due to high costs

According to a survey by the MojaPlaća service, every fifth person in Croatia is working a side job due to rising living costs, with the most common jobs being in the service sector such as waiting tables, followed by passenger transport, cleaning, and various occasional physical jobs.

The survey results show that every fifth person (21 percent) in Croatia has a side job, most often to supplement the family budget. The survey involved 690 respondents and was conducted by the aforementioned service, which is part of the international company Alma Career Croatia, best known for the MojPosao portal.

Respondents indicate that one salary is no longer sufficient for a normal life, especially with rising costs of housing, food, and fuel. Some survey participants admit to seeking a third job, as even two sources of income do not cover all monthly expenses.

A significant portion of those surveyed states that they are considering an additional source of income: 35 percent of respondents currently do not have a side job but are seriously contemplating it. The most common reason is dissatisfaction with their financial situation, as well as a desire for change.

Some have noted that their current job no longer fulfills them, so they see additional engagement as an opportunity to try something new or develop their own small business ‘on the side’.

Approximately 16 percent of respondents stated that they are not considering additional employment at all. The reasons vary, with some claiming that their current salary allows for a decent life, while others simply do not have the time to seek additional employment due to a busy schedule at their current job or family obligations.

On the other hand, 28 percent of survey participants are currently unemployed and looking for work, so the idea of additional engagement is not an option for them at this time.

The report on the results states that the average monthly net salary in Croatia, including allowances, amounted to 1539 euros in the third quarter of this year, but it is increasingly heard that a dignified salary that allows for a life above mere survival should be around two thousand euros.
