What Concerns Us in 2025? Health Takes Precedence Over Finances

Will they stay healthy is the biggest concern keeping residents of eight countries awake at night this year. Although personal concerns vary from country to country, people around the world are most worried about their health (49 percent of respondents globally), finances (45 percent), and security (35 percent). These are the conclusions of a global survey by Allianz Group titled ‘Allianz 3am Report 2025 – What Keeps Us Awake at Night’, in which 8,000 participants from Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Turkey, and the United Kingdom answered questions about personal concerns at the end of August.

Personal Concerns: Health, Finances, and Security

Globally, health has become the primary reason for sleepless nights, recently surpassing finances, which are now the second biggest concern in the world. This trend is present in various countries: Health is the top concern in five out of eight markets, while finances remain the biggest concern in two (Australia and Indonesia). Turkey is the only country where uncertainty about the future ranks first. While there is consensus on the most important concern, differences among countries are clear. For instance, Germans are more focused on political and social changes, Australians on housing conditions and the cost of living, while in Indonesia, the primary focus is on professional life.

– Economic well-being, social satisfaction, and trust in the future over the next decade are closely linked, but globally we are witnessing increased uncertainty, pessimism, and polarization. Our research has shown that many people are worried about their personal future. It is crucial to address the underlying causes to foster understanding and help people feel more secure – said Bernd Heinemann, Head of Strategy, Marketing, and Distribution at Allianz SE.

Personal finances and security are the main sources of anxiety. Unpaid bills, rising debts, pension issues, and making financial decisions are the second biggest fears in the world, where many people are facing higher living costs. According to the survey, personal security is the third biggest concern in all countries. Specifically, the feeling of insecurity outside the home and worries about cybersecurity and data protection trouble people of all age groups around the world.

Different generations also have different concerns: Older generations (baby boomers and Generation X) are most preoccupied with health and broader social issues, while younger generations consider finances their main problem. Millennials and Generation Z are more concerned about issues closely related to their personal and professional lives, such as education, careers, relationships, and technological changes. This generational contrast also extends to environmental awareness. Baby boomers are the most environmentally conscious generation – at least seven percentage points more concerned than any other group, and even twelve points more than Generation Z.

Health: Different Concerns by Generations and Countries

When it comes to health, people are most concerned about their own physical well-being (47 percent), the health of family members (44 percent), and access to healthcare and treatment (43 percent) across all countries. However, health concerns vary depending on the country and age.

Regarding generational differences, the baby boomer generation focuses on physical health and access to treatment (+14 percentage points compared to Generation Z), while younger generations prioritize mental health, with millennials being the generation most oriented towards mental health (42 percent). Millennials, Generation Z, and Generation X are nearly twice as concerned about stress and stress management compared to baby boomers, while Generation X also consistently ranks highest in concern about family health – reflecting their caregiving responsibilities in middle age.
