Medikol Group has ceremoniously marked the beginning of construction on the Special Oncology Hospital Medikol Medical Center, the largest private institution of its kind in Croatia and the region. The project, valued at 106 million euros, has been granted the status of a Strategic Investment Project by the Government of the Republic of Croatia in 2023, as it represents a crucial step in increasing capacity for the treatment of oncology patients.

The hospital is being built in three phases on an area of 55 thousand square meters and will provide patients with a completely new level of oncology care. In the first phase, which is set to be completed by the end of 2026, a radiotherapy center, departments of nuclear medicine, radiology, and a polyclinic will be constructed, employing more than 130 staff members. By early 2027, the hospital plans to admit its first patients, and upon completion of the entire project, the Medikol Medical Center will employ 562 staff members.

On this occasion, the CEO of Medikol Group Ivan Rajković and the director of Poliklinika Medikol Ivanka Trastenjak-Rajković signed the ‘Charter for the Future’ and together placed symbolic items, including the key to the first PET/CT device, a vial of radioisotopes produced by RMC in Zagreb, and a USB drive with documentation on the development of Medikol, into a time capsule that will be opened only in 2075.

– We are investing 106 million euros in this project, and upon completion, the hospital will employ more than 560 people. The strategic importance status granted to us by the Government confirms that this is a project of national interest. Every euro invested in this center remains in Croatia – for the benefit of our patients, our healthcare system, and our economy – emphasized Rajković.

The project is fully complementary to the goals of the European Cancer Plan and the National Cancer Plan 2020–2030 and aims to develop into a regional center of excellence for oncology. The hospital’s vision is based on the joint action of the public and private sectors in the fight against cancer, with the patient at the center of the system. Patients will be provided with unique and comprehensive care in one place – from arrival at the facility to final diagnosis within two weeks, from diagnosis to the start of treatment within two days, and for palliative radiotherapy, treatment will be available in one day.

– The Ministry of Health welcomes every investment in the Croatian healthcare system, and we do not perceive this center as competition but as a valuable contribution to improving the quality of healthcare. We congratulate the investors on their decision to realize their investment in Zagreb, as the support of the local community is an important factor in the project’s realization. The Ministry of Health believes that the synergy of the public and private sectors, with clearly defined relationships and transparency, can contribute to further strengthening the healthcare system and ensuring better healthcare for the citizens of the Republic of Croatia – stated Tomislav Dulibić, envoy of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia and State Secretary of the Ministry of Health.

For the realization of the first phase, 106 million euros have been secured – through a combination of Medikol Group’s own funds and bank project financing. The construction is being carried out by a consortium of contractors Texomolior, Franc Mont, and Art Metali, while the professional supervision and project management are handled by the company Interkonzalting.

With the construction of the Medikol Medical Center, Croatia will gain the largest private special oncology hospital in the region, which, alongside the existing capacities of the public system, will ensure faster and higher quality access to treatment, with a clear goal – reducing cancer mortality and improving the quality of life for patients.
