Even while living with his parents in a small apartment, Tomislav Butina hid his first graphics and drawings under the bed, which he bought with his scholarship and pocket money. Football was his profession, but art was a passion that has followed him throughout his life. Today, years after defending for Dinamo, Club Brugge, Olympiakos, and the Croatian national team, that passion has turned into a serious collection.
In Lider’s podcast, he talks with host and journalist Roko Kalafatić about the journey from Zagreb’s pitches to major European stadiums, about waiting for an opportunity behind Dražen Ladić, about moments of glory, but also injuries that taught him to cope with uncertainty. He also discusses what the transition from sports to ‘civilian’ life looked like and how much art has helped him in that transition.
He reveals why he gradually turned from classical art to abstraction and geometry, what role friendships with artists play in shaping his collection, and whether he sees a possibility in the future for the works he has been collecting for years to become available to the public.
