E-commerce has long taken root among consumers, opening a ‘gold mine’ for logistics and delivery companies. The package delivery business is growing year by year, both globally and at our local level. According to data from the Croatian Regulatory Authority for Network Activities (HAKOM), 2.5 million more packages were delivered in the first quarter of this year, an increase of 19.4 percent. Packages accounted for 24.2 percent of the total market in the first quarter, which is over four percentage points higher than the previous year.
This year marks the 12th anniversary of the complete liberalization of the postal services market, during which 24 postal service providers have operated in the market. HP-Hrvatska pošta remains the largest provider with a market share of 82 percent in terms of services rendered and 58.2 percent in total revenue, according to HAKOM data. A dominant position requires constant investments, and regarding the plans of Hrvatska pošta for this and next year, CEO Ivan Čulo will elaborate at the traditional Lider conference Day of Big Plans, which will be held on September 24 in Zagreb.
One of the significant innovations in HP’s operations will start in the fall when the Cargo Polo pallet delivery brand will appear on the market, for which HP has also established the subsidiary PostLogistik. The brand was created to further increase competitiveness in logistics operations, explains Čulo. – This company will take over the complete trucking transport of Hrvatska pošta, making us a serious player in that part of the market. With its fleet of trucks, Hrvatska pošta can be one of the most serious trucking carriers in Croatia, which will allow the company to expand its range of services to citizens – emphasizes the head of the Post.
The main investments that HP plans for 2025 and 2026 include doubling the network of parcel lockers, acquiring electric tricycles, purchasing a small package sorting machine, and building a new high-bay warehouse. – The new high-bay warehouse, covering 20,000 square meters, will have 40,000 pallet spaces. The project is in the design phase, and the total investment value is around 12 million euros. This investment is necessary because we have recognized that there is no such commercial high-bay warehouse in Croatia that would meet the future needs of Hrvatska pošta, and the philosophy of this Management over the past eight years has been to do everything we can ourselves. Pallet business will have increasing significance in the future, and the logistics potential of Hrvatska pošta in this segment is something we plan to maximize – states Čulo.
Regarding the previously mentioned package delivery, HP’s express package delivery service achieved 19 percent more volume than in 2023, and revenue in 2024 was one-fifth higher compared to the previous year. This trend has continued in the first two quarters of this year. – In the first three months of 2025, packages accounted for 24.2 percent of the total market. We expect the number of packages to continue to grow in the future, although more than half of our revenue still comes from letters and registered mail. This will change in the future as digitalization increasingly leads us to a paperless world, so the majority of revenue will come from package business. In the first quarter of this year, revenue from postal services increased by 9.3 percent compared to the same period last year – emphasizes Čulo.
