After one of the most polarized races for the White House in the history of the United States, Republican candidate Donald Trump was elected as the 47th president of the USA winning 277 electoral votes, defeating Democrat Kamala Harris who secured 224 electoral votes.
The election results were commented on by political consultant Domagoj Juričić, who believes that the economy, specifically inflation, was decisive because, as he claims, when the average person in the USA feels inflation firsthand, they are not interested in macroeconomic data, exports, or other economic indicators.
– The economy is doing well in the USA and Joe Biden has done good things, but inflation has ‘eaten’ a lot of that. The middle class in America has been shrinking for many years, and you have people who cannot afford what has always been the American dream – explains Juričić.
The second factor that Juričić believes was decisive in this election is security, where a paradox occurred in which minorities voted for Trump despite the newly elected president’s speeches against minorities.
– Trump won both in individual votes and in electorates, although it was expected that Kamala Harris would win the majority of individual votes – says Juričić, adding that the USA is undoubtedly changing and that the America we knew no longer exists.
– It is something new, transforming into a new, different world. Trump will now only talk to the big players, and that is a problem we will also feel. He will not have time for small countries, he will not deal with them but will try to sit at the table with the big players – claims Juričić, who adds that Trump will divide the world into zones of influence, which is dangerous because it could push Europe to take some defensive actions that this bloc has long avoided.
Additionally, Trump could withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement again, and he could also encourage so-called ‘Trumpism’ in its European version, meaning, according to Juričić, it will be much easier for those riding the ‘Trumpist wave’ like Aleksandar Vučić, Viktor Orban, and Robert Fico.
Political analyst Krešimir Macan also commented on the results for Lider, highlighting that Trump is the oldest newly elected president and the only convicted person in this position. Macan reported to Lider from the USA and stated that everyone, including Trump himself, was surprised by the clear and convincing victory that they did not expect to come so quickly.
– They expected additional recounts like in 2020, and Trump seems to control both the Senate and very likely the House of Representatives, thus having all levers of power in his hands. Although the votes for the House of Representatives will still be counted for days. The victory is very convincing and has left the country speechless, except for Trump’s supporters who celebrated in the streets – Macan told us.
This political analyst also shared that a much closer and more uncertain battle was expected in the seven swing states.
– The convincing nature of the victory has left even the biggest critics without arguments – says Macan, who also claims that we can expect executive decisions regarding the border and the exploitation of shale oil, which he wants to use to lower oil prices in the first days of his mandate.
– We see that cryptocurrencies and stocks are skyrocketing to record levels. America after Trump will not be the same. Whether he will succeed in reconciling and uniting the USA and the fiercely divided voters remains to be seen – concludes Krešimir Macan, who, like Juričić, states that the economy (39 percent) and immigration (20 percent) were decisive, confirming that the president who offers a better life to citizens from an economic perspective and calming wars, which he promised last night, will win the elections, which will be important for the situation in Ukraine.
