After one of the most polarized races for the White House in the history of the United States, Republican candidate Donald Trump has been elected as the 47th President of the United States, winning 277 electoral votes, defeating Democrat Kamala Harris who secured 224 electoral votes.
American networks Fox News, CNN, and NBC declared Trump the incoming president as he has secured enough Electoral College votes according to their projections after victories over Harris in battleground states, including Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
Trump, who never conceded defeat in the 2020 election to President Joe Biden and was accused of attempting to overturn the results, placed immigration, inflation, and crime at the center of his populist campaign. His views on foreign policy—from his antipathy towards military aid to Ukraine to his promise to impose sweeping tariffs on imports—have caused anxiety among both allies and opponents of Washington.
The victory of the twice-impeached former president marks a stunning political comeback and confirms how firm his grip on the Republican Party remains.
At 78 years old, the real estate mogul is the oldest person ever elected president of the United States. In the most harrowing moment of the campaign, Trump was shot and lightly wounded in the right ear by an assailant who opened fire at a rally in Pennsylvania. Trump narrowly escaped death, but one of his supporters in the crowd was killed.
As we reported earlier, global markets reacted immediately to the U.S. elections, with the dollar strengthening, Chinese markets falling, and Wall Street and European markets rising.
