The transformation of the automotive industry could cost Germany 186,000 jobs by 2035, according to the VDA association, highlighting that approximately a quarter of these jobs have already been lost.

Between 2019 and 2023, 46,000 jobs have already been eliminated in the automotive industry, primarily due to the transition to electric vehicles, a study conducted by the Prognos research institute revealed on Tuesday.

The automotive companies’ association emphasizes that the competitiveness of German companies has been weakened by high electricity prices, high taxes, and increasing bureaucracy.

The automotive giant of the largest European economy, Volkswagen, is reportedly threatening, according to the works council, to close at least three factories in its home country of Germany, laying off tens of thousands of employees and reducing production in the remaining plants.

– “The fact is that we need a competitive location with the right political framework conditions to keep as much added value and jobs in Germany as possible and to create new jobs,” states the VDA in its report.
