Croatia exports 40 percent of everything it produces

The total value of industrial products sold as Made in Croatia last year amounted to 27.8 billion euros, of which 40 percent was achieved in foreign markets – data provided by this year’s research on the production and sale of industrial products in 2023 by the Croatian Bureau of Statistics called Prodcom. Compared to the previous year, the value of sold industrial products increased by 2.7 percent, which is not a bad result considering that last year industrial production in physical indicators was 0.1 percent lower than the year before and that at the same time the value of Croatian commodity exports fell by 5.1 percent.

Prodcom is an abbreviation for the production statistics of the European Union for industrial production, derived from the French term Production Communautaire (community production). The research is conducted annually, and its purpose is to obtain information about national and EU markets as well as international markets. The subject of the research includes finished industrial products and industrial services defined by the Prodcom list, which is updated every year. The sales value is expressed without taxes (VAT and excise duties).

In the Croatian research for 2023, 2876 manufacturing companies and crafts employing more than ten people were included. The results of the Prodcom research provide detailed information about the national market and its competitiveness in international markets at the level of individual products and as such provide a good insight into the state of national industrial production.

The most valuable resource is electricity

From the Prodcom research, we learn that the most valuable industrial resource in Croatia is the production of electricity, whose sales value from domestic sources last year amounted to 7.3 billion euros (half a billion euros more than in 2022!), of which as much as 93 percent went to domestic consumers. Just under one billion euros was the total market value of production in all other activities that do not belong to the manufacturing industry, while everything else, i.e., 19.7 billion euros, was achieved in the sale of goods produced in the manufacturing industry.

Within it, the value of food products stands out far above all others, with a sales value at the exit of goods from the plant amounting to 4.1 billion euros, about 200 million euros more than the year before, although last year’s production was quantitatively 2.9 percent lower than in 2022. However, prices in food production rose on average by 7.4 percent last year, with the price increase in the domestic market being significantly higher than the increase in foreign markets. Despite this, the export of food products increased by about ten percent last year, and the value of sales abroad accounted for more than 27 percent of the total value of sold industrial food products.

When it comes to the share of export value in the total sales value last year, according to data from Prodcom, as many as three activities in exports achieve more than 80 percent of their sales. This includes the production of electrical equipment (81.2 percent of sales value comes from exports), the production of machinery and equipment (86.4 percent), and, as a record holder, the production of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations. The Croatian pharmaceutical industry invoiced 872 million euros last year, of which as much as 88.9 percent went to foreign customers.

What is the value of production according to contracts with domestic and foreign clients (for others’ accounts), as well as processing and contract work and service production of brands and trade marks, and what is domestic consumption, find out in the rest of the text available in the new issue of the printed and digital edition of Lider.
