Summa Equity, an investment fund based in Stockholm, has acquired a majority stake in the company Nutris, announced Zvonimir Sedlić, the director of the company from Novi Šenkovec, on LinkedIn. Sedlić emphasized that the partnership with Summa Equity is a turning point for Nutris, adding that the acquisition will have a positive impact not only on the company but also on the local communities with which Nutris collaborates, as well as on the global food system.

In fact, Summa Equity, as explained by Sedlić, has become the majority owner of the Danish holding company Pure20. Since this Danish company acquired Nutris this year, Summa Equity has indirectly become the majority owner of the company from Novi Šenkovec. In this process, Sedlić remains the second-largest shareholder in Pure20, and thus indirectly in Nutris, of which he is the founder.

– Summa’s investment in Nutris is primarily a confirmation to the entire team that what we have built from scratch has great market potential. This investment will not only bring economic benefits but also a significant positive impact on society. In collaboration with our farmer partners, we have developed regenerative agriculture projects aimed at revitalizing the soil and reducing carbon footprints, thereby contributing to a sustainable future. The partnership with Summa will enable us to increase productivity, develop a market with innovative and sustainable products, expand our presence in the European and American markets, and continue investing in the development of new and unique products – said Sedlić, who will remain at the helm of Nutris even after this acquisition.

According to information on the Summa Equity website, it is the largest European thematic investment fund, managing assets worth around five billion euros, and views global uncertainties as opportunities. The fund was founded by Reynir Indahl, a successful investor with an impressive portfolio, who was shaken after the financial crisis of 2008, which, like many, he did not foresee and was eager to understand the underlying causes of the crisis.

Determined to change his way of working, Reynir Indahl began working on philanthropic projects in collaboration with the princely family of Liechtenstein. In 2015, he developed a concept that became the basis for Summa Equity. Since its inception, Summa Equity has positioned itself as a thematic investment company that invests in companies addressing global challenges. Their investment strategy focuses on industries aligned with megatrends within three key themes: resource efficiency, changing demographics, and technological transformation. The company’s purpose is to address the social, ecological, and business challenges we face as a society.

In this context, Summa Equity has invested in Nutris, a company founded in 2019 by Zvonimir Sedlić. Nutris, with the support of around 500 cooperators, produces faba beans used to obtain proteins applicable in various products. This investment, realized from the Summa Equity Fund III, which manages 2.3 billion euros, leverages Summa Equity’s long-standing experience in optimizing portfolio company strategies to create value, stimulate sustainable growth, and address key global challenges.

Nutris is committed to meeting the growing demand for healthy, environmentally friendly, and clean products. By using high-quality faba bean proteins and a patented process, Nutris aims to enhance the taste and nutritional profile of plant-based dairy products, meat, sports nutrition, and convenient food solutions. The goal is to transform the food industry through the use of plant proteins, including faba beans, which have one of the lowest carbon footprints among plant proteins, with over 90% lower emissions compared to whey proteins, and offers an alternative to soy and pea proteins.

Sedlić expressed gratitude to the Nutris team, which consists of 65 members, key partners such as HBOR, Meelunie, cooperators, and especially professors Keld Ejdrup Markedal and Jens Christian Sørensen from Bioptimate with whom collaboration began from day one. He also thanked Summa Equity, especially Kees Kruythoff and Jacob Frandsen.
