On the heels of ChatGPT: Photomath among the most used AI applications

In a recently published list of the top one hundred generative artificial intelligence applications that people use the most, released by the American venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, the Croatian application Photomath for solving mathematical problems has also found its place. Specifically, Photomath ranked third on the list of the fifty best GenAI mobile applications by the number of monthly active users, marking the second time this year it has achieved this. Only the most widespread ChatGPT and Microsoft Edge are ahead of it.

Thus, Photomath is among the AI-based applications that people use the most, more than, for example, Microsoft’s Bing or Copilot. Unsurprisingly, ChatGPT took first place on the list of the 50 best AI applications by the number of unique monthly visits, followed closely by Character.ai and Perplexity.

Andreessen Horowitz publishes data on the most used AI applications every six months, measuring unique monthly visits and monthly active users. The changing landscape of the artificial intelligence market and ecosystem is evidenced by the fact that, compared to the previous report published in March 2024, the new list features 30 percent new companies. ChatGPT has topped both lists for the third time, however, competition is becoming increasingly fierce.

Photomath was also on the list of the best GenAI applications by the number of monthly active users in March this year when the first report was published. At that time, the edtech category, which includes Photomath that uses a smartphone camera to solve math problems, was highlighted as popular, with only six other applications in that category.

Additionally, while most mobile AI applications have not raised external funding, four out of the seven ranked edtech applications, including Photomath, have raised over 30 million dollars, according to PitchBook data. It is worth noting that the Croatian company Photomath, which stands behind the eponymous application, has been owned by Google since last year. The acquisition amount is not known to date, although unofficial estimates suggest the figure reaches around 500 million dollars. However, it is considered that Google’s acquisition of Photomath is the largest acquisition of a Croatian company to date.
