Many remember childhood dreams about what they wanted to be when they grew up, but how many adults have truly realized those childhood dreams? This was the starting point of a survey conducted by Alma Career Croatia, which manages the MojPosao portal, involving more than 750 respondents.
According to the MojPosao portal, the results of this survey show that only 17 percent of respondents are engaged in jobs they dreamed of as children, with the most frequently mentioned professions being in education, social care, and IT, namely occupational therapists, teachers, physiotherapists, and programmers.
On the other hand, more than half of the respondents, or 51 percent, admit that they have not managed to realize their childhood dreams and feel regret about it. Some had their careers ‘redirected’ by their parents towards something they did not want or for which they lacked the necessary competencies, while others gave up over time, citing unfavorable circumstances and environment as obstacles to achieving their dreams.
Approximately a quarter of respondents, or 23 percent, state that they do not work in the jobs they desired as children, but consider this a positive thing. As they note, over time they realized they wanted to build a career in a completely different field. Among their former dreams were professions such as astronaut, tram driver, police officer, soldier, professional musician, and dancer.
Finally, as MojPosao reports, only nine percent of respondents claim that their current job is their true love and that they would not change it.
