European Commissioner for the Internal Market Thierry Breton warned billionaire Elon Musk in a letter on Monday that he must comply with European Union laws ahead of Musk’s interview with American presidential candidate Donald Trump on the social platform X.
The interview, scheduled for two o’clock after midnight on Tuesday Central European Time, will also be available to users in the European Union, wrote Breton.
– In this context, I am compelled to remind you of the due diligence regarding the obligations under the Digital Services Act (DSA) – he added.
– The obligations of the DSA apply without exception or discrimination to the moderation of the entire community of users and content on X (including you as a user with over 190 million followers), available to users in the European Union, and they must be adhered to with a risk-based approach from the DSA, which requires greater attention in the case of a potential increase in risk profile – wrote Breton.
The DSA requires very large online platforms to do more to combat illegal content and risks to public safety.
European technology regulators ruled last month that X violated the DSA and misled its users by using blue checkmarks.
X stated that it disagrees with the European Union’s stance on its compliance with DSA rules, while platform owner Musk threatened to initiate legal action.
