Prime Minister and HDZ President Andrej Plenković stated that the current governor of the Croatian National Bank (HNB) Boris Vujčić will be elected for another term, emphasizing that the policy of the HNB should be guided by the most important issue, which is price stability.
– We talked, the governor of the HNB and I, and we agreed that he continues with another term – said Prime Minister Plenković to reporters after the meeting of the broader Presidency of the HDZ when asked about Vujčić.
He recalled that together with Governor Vujčić, they led the process related to Croatia’s membership in the euro area, emphasizing that these are positions where continuity is very important.
– We have very high-quality cooperation and a sense of satisfaction with what is behind us. The policy of the HNB should be guided by the most important issue, which is price stability. It is now, after joining the euro area, additionally linked to what the European Central Bank is doing – said Plenković.
Before the summer break, the Croatian Parliament will decide this week who will lead the Croatian National Bank (HNB) for the next six years, as Governor Boris Vujčić’s term expires on July 13. The term also expires for his deputy Sandra Švaljek and two vice governors, Slavko Tešija and Roman Šubić.
The Parliament appoints the governor at the proposal of its Committee for Elections and Appointments, with the opinion of the Committee for Finance and State Budget.
There Should Be a Realistic Number of State Secretaries
When asked when an agreement with the Homeland Movement regarding state secretaries is expected, Prime Minister Plenković said that they are talking to a number of actors who are in the parliamentary majority and that this is not just a matter for the Homeland Movement.
He explained that this topic is being discussed, there are some proposals, and there are more interested parties for more ministries. – We need to find some realistic frameworks. There cannot be 150 state secretaries in the government now – said the Prime Minister.
Regarding the statements of the president of the Homeland Movement Ivan Penava that this party counts on 10 to 15 state secretaries, the Prime Minister emphasized: – We will agree, there needs to be a realistic number. – A realistic number is such that there are fewer state secretaries than representatives. That says it all – he added.
