Končar has secured a new valuable contract in the global market, further expanding its strong references in the construction and revitalization of hydroelectric power plants. To its rich portfolio of over 400 constructed and revitalized hydroelectric power plants worldwide, Končar has added the revitalization of the Vidraru HPP with a capacity of 4 x 67.3 MVA in Romania. The contract was signed by Končar – Engineering as a member of a consortium with the Romanian company Electromontaj S.A., and the scope of work includes design, production, delivery, dismantling of existing and installation of new equipment, as well as testing and commissioning. The contract is worth over 188 million euros, of which Končar’s share amounts to nearly 80 million euros, the statement said.

The Vidraru HPP, with an installed capacity of 220 MW and an average annual electricity production of 400 GWh, was built between 1961 and 1966 as a peak power plant on the Arges River. It is one of the significant hydroelectric power plants in the Romanian energy system, and its revitalization with the engagement of Končar will improve existing performance, extend the lifespan of the facility, and strengthen Romania’s energy system. The service buyer is S.P.E.E.H. Hidroelectrica based in Bucharest. It is the largest electricity producer in Romania, generating a net annual production of 15.6 TWh with 6.3 GW of installed capacity in hydroelectric power plants. The company owns and operates as many as 182 hydroelectric power plants, five pumping stations, and one wind farm, located in eight different geographical areas of Romania. On behalf of Hidroelectrica S.A., the contract was signed on June 28, 2024, by CEO Karoly Borbely, while on behalf of Končar, the contract was signed by a member of the Management Board of Končar – Engineering, Darijo Runjić, together with the consortium partner, the company ELECTROMONTAJ S.A., represented by General Director Iounut-Adrian Tanasoaica.

– We are extremely proud of achieving this important collaboration, which represents yet another confirmation of Končar’s high competitiveness in the global market. It is of particular value to us that such a serious and relevant European company in the electricity production segment recognized our knowledge, skills, and the quality and breadth of our business portfolio in the international tender. Additionally, the strategic value of this breakthrough, besides its financial significance, lies in the fact that it opens a new market in the European Union where Končar has not had a significant presence so far, emphasizes Gordan Kolak, CEO of Končar.

This revitalization is contracted on a ‘turnkey’ basis, and the scope of work for Končar and the local consortium partner includes production units, i.e., generators and turbines, hydromechanical equipment, generator voltage installations, management and protection systems for the power plant, transformers, power supply systems, and other electro-mechanical auxiliary systems.
