After just over half a year, when the Croatian startup Daytona raised two million dollars in a pre-seed investment round that included leaders from the Croatian tech scene, a new seed investment round of five million dollars has arrived.

This investment round, as stated in the company’s press release, is led by Upfront Ventures, one of the most well-known funds in the U.S. managing over six billion dollars in assets and an investor in well-known companies such as GOAT, PayPal Credit, and Ring. Trust in Daytona, a startup focused on cloud programming, has also been reaffirmed by previous investor 500 Emerging Europe, part of the investment company 500 Global, which manages assets worth 2.7 billion dollars and has invested in tech giants like Canva, Twilio, and Reddit.

The new financial injection will allow Daytona to enhance its namesake open-source development environment management tool, as well as create new jobs in marketing, sales, and engineering.

As explained by Ivan Burazin, co-founder and CEO of Daytona, their goal is to ‘make every programmer more productive’.

– Today, setting up a development environment can be compared to starting a car in the 1900s – with many steps and breakdowns. Daytona makes it as simple as starting a modern car – you just press a button and go. We help programmers focus on what really matters to them, which is writing code and building innovative solutions – added Burazin.

New investment, new board member

With this investment, the startup Daytona, founded by Burazin after leaving Infobip just under a year ago, has also gained a new board member, Kevin Zhang, a partner at Upfront Ventures.

Daytona initially emerged as a solution tailored for large enterprises that enables programmers to automate the configuration of their work environments, facilitate collaboration, and increase productivity while adhering to corporate security needs. Recognizing the importance of these advantages beyond large organizations, Daytona has created an open-source version aimed at individual programmers. In just two months, Daytona has gathered thousands of followers on GitHub, the leading global platform for open-source projects, and is consistently on the list of popular projects, indicating strong demand and significant community interest.

One of the ongoing challenges for programmers is the issue of ‘it works on my machine’, where mismatched development environments lead to significant productivity losses. Daytona directly addresses this problem by allowing every programmer to create a fully functional working environment with a single command ‘daytona create’.

– The most advanced companies in the world have adopted cloud development environments as a way to achieve a unified development environment for their teams. The founders of Daytona have been working on this since they created one of the first cloud IDEs over a decade ago. Their expertise and passion uniquely position them to build a programming experience that also meets the strictest security requirements – said Zhang.
