Until the Emergence of the Small Croatian Company Recreated, No One in the EU Dealt with the Repair and Sale of Advertised Footwear

Old can be as good as new, damaged can be restored, mistakes can be corrected, and expensive can become cheap overnight. The Zagreb-based company Recreated has turned these ideas into reality and the foundation of its business. Cleaning, restoration, and personalization of worn footwear and fashion accessories such as bags and belts, as well as the repair and subsequent sale of complaint footwear that has been given new life, have set Recreated apart as the only European company providing all these services.

The volume of work has been steadily increasing since the company was founded in 2019, and with a new partner, plans are in place to expand beyond the borders of Croatia, and one day perhaps even to enter the Zagreb Stock Exchange. Like a scene from a movie, the story begins without money and out of necessity. And considering the times we live in – with a single post on Instagram. The founders of the company, brothers Kristian and Adrian Cvijić, shared how ‘everything clicked’.

To make old look like new

– Our family was not well-off enough to buy new sneakers every month. So one day I walked into my brother Adrian’s room and saw him carefully cleaning his sneakers and then customizing them. He graduated from the School of Applied Arts and Design, so he applied what he learned to his footwear. I told him that the sneakers looked great after his intervention. But he also needed to check if there was interest from people for such a thing. Since we posted our first post on Instagram, orders have not stopped coming in – Kristian begins.

At that moment, the idea transformed into a startup, which took its first business steps in a small office provided by their mother, an accountant, who gladly offered it to her sons, moving her business to the living room of the apartment they lived in. The targeted niche brought success, leading to an imminent move to new and larger spaces. Showing people before and after photos of a regular pair of sneakers can clearly make a difference. And the calculations behind it confirm why this business is truly a win-win.

– Imagine a pair of sneakers Alexander McQueen that costs 550 euros in the store. Imagine a person who desperately wants them but does not have enough money to buy them. This is the solution – they buy them used and worn for 100 euros from the ‘previous owner’, and we clean and restore them for 95 euros. So, for a much lower price, the person gets sneakers that look like new – explained Cvijić.

How they found a partner, how and where they plan to expand, and how they cope with the lack of workers can be read in the rest of the entrepreneurial story of the Cvijić brothers, available in the new issue of the printed and digital edition of Lider.
