ABB Metals Europe, which provides complete management of the bidding and project execution cycle in the metals industry for significant international projects, has reached its 10th year of operation. ABB leadership recognized the team’s successes with a celebration at the headquarters in Zagreb.
This team, with more than 50 employees in the Regional Execution Center (REC), has grown from fewer than 20 people since its opening in 2014. It is designed to collaborate in project business with other ABB business units focused on the metals industry in Europe, in their home markets, and wherever their projects are located worldwide. The collaboration business model integrates sales support, project management, engineering, and operational support – procurement, logistics, control, and administration. It is a fully functional organization that encompasses complete support for project business, from the bidding phase to full execution.
Originally established as a collaboration model for ABB in Germany and Croatia, the team is led by Vatroslav Jakobović, Local Business Line Manager Metals, ABB Process Industries Croatia. Today, the team in Croatia collaborates with ABB project teams (front-end units) based in numerous European countries. Notable projects executed under the ABB Metals Europe collaboration are carried out in various manufacturing facilities – rolling mills, process lines, profile mills, primary metal production, and other metal manufacturing applications in Europe, as well as in other countries such as Algeria, Saudi Arabia, the USA, and South Africa, primarily operating in the demanding area of modernizing existing production lines – so-called brownfield projects.

The strength of the existing team lies in its extensive expertise, primarily in automation and management of electric drive systems, in the field of metal production and processing, with many years of industry experience, relying not only on engineers but also on a full range of functions and a competitive offering.
‘ABB Metals Europe truly stands as a shining beacon of productivity and efficiency with customers in mind, and I am very pleased that we can celebrate the 10th anniversary together,’ said Bernd Sachweh, Cluster Manager Europe, Business Line Metals, ABB Process Industries. ‘In many ways, this business model in our unit is advanced and unique within ABB. It has high-quality project outcome results, and may it continue for a long time. Customers tell us that their satisfaction level is high, and that only encourages our dedicated team to achieve even better results in the future. We commend the leadership and the skilled people working in this team.’
Collaborating with customers in over twenty countries worldwide, in more than 10 years, the business model of ABB Metals Europe combines deep industry knowledge, world-class solutions, and local expertise, providing value to our customers by enabling collaboration between ABB’s front-end units and the REC in Croatia for project-related business.
