Crypto is a Major Election Issue in the U.S. for 20 Percent of Voters

Crypto is emerging as a hot topic in this year’s presidential elections in the U.S., with many voters eager to hear how their candidates will discuss this asset class. According to a survey by Digital Currency Group (DCG) of 1,201 registered voters conducted last month, approximately one in five voters considers cryptocurrencies a key issue in the 2024 elections.

About 40 percent of voters said they want their candidates to talk more about crypto, and the majority of respondents agreed that crypto regulation needs a revision. Interest exists even though only 14 percent of voters said they are exposed to cryptocurrencies, while 69 percent said they do not yet feel familiar with the asset class.

– Most voters do not believe that elected officials will understand innovative technology like crypto, and more than half are concerned that policymakers are stifling innovation with excessive regulation – the DCG report states.

Policymakers are currently in a bipartisan political struggle over crypto. Democrats want strict industry rules to protect consumers similar to those in the existing banking system. In contrast, Republicans seek tailored legislation with a mild emphasis to avoid driving the industry overseas.

Republican candidate Donald Trump recently supported the crypto industry, despite having previously taken a firm stance against Bitcoin.

Last week, Republicans passed a resolution in Congress that nullifies SAB 121, part of the accounting guidelines supported by the Democrat-led White House, which prevents banks from providing custodial services for crypto assets.

The DCG survey mentions that 50 percent of respondents said they would be more likely to buy cryptocurrencies if offered by an established, regulated company.

Survey respondents included voters in Michigan, Nevada, Ohio, Montana, Pennsylvania, and Arizona.
