The British company developing artificial intelligence technology for self-driving cars, Wayve, has recently raised $1.05 billion in investments. Among the leading investors are Microsoft, Nvidia, and SoftBank. This investment will help Wayve in building the autonomous cars of the future, and it is important to note that this is the largest investment in an AI company in Europe to date.

In light of this news, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stated that this ‘solidifies the United Kingdom’s position as a superpower in the field of artificial intelligence’.

– Investments send a key signal to the market about the strength of the artificial intelligence ecosystem in the United Kingdom, and we are pleased with the development of new AI companies in our country – said Wayve’s director Alex Kendall.

Wayve is developing technology aimed at powering future autonomous vehicles using what it calls ’embodied artificial intelligence’, which, unlike AI models that perform cognitive or generative tasks such as answering questions or converting text to images, interacts and learns in space, that is, in the field.

British Transport Minister Mark Harper told the BBC in November that autonomous vehicles could be found on certain roads within the United Kingdom by 2026.

Government traffic rules for automated vehicles – which they say will ‘unlock a revolution in traffic’ – are expected to be adopted in Parliament soon. The British government has proposed legislation on automated vehicles that would establish a regulatory framework for this new segment in traffic.

While the United Kingdom is working towards the approval of the regulatory framework, the technology of autonomous vehicles has faced obstacles on its path to international adoption. American regulatory bodies continue to examine the safety of autonomous features from various manufacturers to prevent traffic accidents.

Ford is the latest car manufacturer to face an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration due to its BlueCruise technology installed in certain vehicles. Additionally, Tesla, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, recalled more than two million of its vehicles in December following an investigation by this Association regarding the safety of the autonomous segment of these cars. They now have to provide evidence that the vehicles have been modified to alleviate customer concerns.

In conclusion, with this investment, despite the fact that all the most valuable artificial intelligence companies are headquartered in the USA and China, the United Kingdom is leaving its mark on the global artificial intelligence market.
