TikTok is on the verge of a ban in the United States. The U.S. Senate approved a controversial bill at the end of April that could lead to a ban on this popular platform, and now ByteDance, its parent company, has nine months to sell its stake or content creators will be left without their favorite place to post and view short videos.
– Current discussions in the U.S. about a potential ban on TikTok are mainly based on national security and data privacy concerns. The concerns are particularly focused on possible connections between TikTok and the Chinese government, raising fears of improper handling of American users’ data. However, it is important to highlight that TikTok has taken significant steps to counter these accusations and improve its image regarding data protection – said TikTok consultant and founder of the influencer community Crew, Dario Marčac, recently for Lider.
According to Statista data, TikTok has about 150 million active users in the U.S., which means that a ban could result in the platform losing a significant portion of its audience. And while many may now wonder what a ban on TikTok in the U.S. has to do with Europe, the fact is that American TikTok profiles are the most popular, and many young entrepreneurs have expanded and branded their businesses thanks to this social network. These same entrepreneurs are now in trouble as they will lose part of their reach, but they are trying to alleviate their clients’ fears by announcing that they will switch to other platforms in the event of a ban. Thus, Croats and other Europeans will have to follow American content creators if they want to keep up with American trends. So, what platforms could be an alternative to TikTok?
Since this social network hit the market, many others have started to copy it, introducing features that TikTok offers to compete. TikTok’s biggest clone is Instagram’s Reels. Creators often share their content on both TikTok and Reels, so Instagram is seen as the most likely successor to TikTok.
However, given that TikTok’s algorithm is largely unmatched, Instagram Reels may not be able to display videos that interest you at the same level as TikTok can. But Instagram is improving the Reels recommendation algorithm, so we can likely expect it to get better over time.
YouTube is another platform developing a product similar to TikTok. YouTube Shorts could be the best TikTok alternative for those who love discovering new music on TikTok, given that Shorts has access to YouTube’s vast library of songs and music videos.
