What Leads to the Craze for Meme Tokens and Is This the Strangest Crypto Bull Market?

The hype around meme tokens dominates the crypto community on social media. An anonymous user on X under @0xLawliette told their 46 thousand followers that it is clear that the craze for meme tokens is driven by retail investors.

– Meme tokens are a clear indicator of whether retail is present. Anyone who has been here in the bear market can see that we are now in a bull market – they wrote.

The total market capitalization of meme tokens was two billion dollars in 2023, and today this sector of the crypto market is worth 62 billion.

Not Everyone is Convinced

– Small investors are here, they just are no longer interested in the technological and financial revolution. Everyone returning to crypto realizes that crypto is a gamble, and meme tokens are the best means for that speculation – just some of the comments.

However, not everyone is convinced.

Ethereum educator Anthony Sassano said that after spending the last decade in crypto, he can confidently say that this is by far the strangest bull market that crypto has ever had.

It seems that the four-year cycle is ‘dead’, he added before expressing the opinion that it seems fundamentals in investing currently play no role at all.

– I won’t really believe that retail investors are here in any meaningful way until we see the whole market grow together. These isolated pumps are clearly driven by crypto users and are just passing the hot potato of money – Sassano added.

It was also highlighted that most trading occurs on centralized exchanges, where large volumes have not yet been recorded. Moreover, many of these meme tokens can only be traded on decentralized exchanges, which is not the domain of the average retail trader.

Growth of Meme Token Market Capitalization

In a recent interview, BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes said that individuals should think twice before dismissing meme tokens as ‘stupid’ or ‘worthless’.

According to CoinGecko, the total market capitalization of meme coins recently surpassed 70 billion dollars with over seven billion dollars in daily trading volume.

A token like dogwifhat reached a market capitalization of 4.4 billion dollars, more than Arbitrum, Immutable, and Cronos.

Dogecoin has nearly three times the market capitalization of Chainlink, and Shiba Inu is twice as large as Polygon, so it really seems that traditional crypto narratives, utility projects with purpose and fundamentals are currently completely overshadowed by meme mania.
