Alkaloid Launches New Capital Project Worth 19.4 Million Euros

In the direction of commitment to continuous modernization and expansion of production capacities, production volume, and product range, Alkaloid AD Skopje has completed the realization of its largest investment endeavor in the last two decades – a new plant for the production of solid pharmaceutical forms, Tablet Department 2.0, and the accompanying technical space.

The new technical-technological capacity, aimed at more than doubling the volume and greater flexibility in the production of solid pharmaceutical forms, spans 6,200 square meters (production-technical space), and for it, Alkaloid has invested a total of 19.4 million euros. For the construction of this facility, which began in April 2021, 30 domestic and 16 foreign companies were engaged, and the construction works and equipping were carried out under the guidance of the professional services of Alkaloid AD Skopje.

The space is designed in accordance with strict good manufacturing practice standards, and all processes are fully integrated and digitized, with automatic generation of all data from process controls. In the new plant for the production of solid pharmaceutical forms, the production of tablets, film-coated tablets, capsules, and bilayer tablets will take place, which are being introduced for the first time as a production technology in Macedonia.

These are tablets that contain multiple active substances with different chemical-physical properties or with different release mechanisms, which are carefully and precisely dosed, but physically separated with properly ensured stability and efficacy, allowing patients to receive complete therapy of multiple medications through just one tablet. The equipment for the production of solid pharmaceutical forms is sourced from renowned global manufacturers of this type of equipment: GEA (wet granulation equipment), Alexanderwerk (dry granulation equipment), Lodige (homogenization equipment), Fette (tablet press), Glatt (film coating system), De Lama (automatic container washing machine), and others.

With the commissioning of the new technical-technological unit for the production of solid pharmaceutical forms, the production volume is doubled, so instead of the previous two billion tablets per year, the current projected production capacity exceeds four billion tablets per year.

This is one of the largest investment projects of Alkaloid AD in the last two decades. In 2005, the company had placements of 53.1 million euros, and in 2023, it reported consolidated placements of 268.3 million euros. As a result of this fivefold continuous growth, investments worth over 220 million euros have been realized over the past 15 years. Alkaloid’s pharmaceutical products are present in the markets of more than 40 countries worldwide.
