Taylor Swift Effect: Where She Goes, the Economy Thrives

There is no doubt that American musician and songwriter Taylor Swift has recently become a hot topic on almost all portals and social media. She is talented, capable, and smart, as confirmed not only by her immense success in the music world but also by her successful business techniques, making her name increasingly heard in discussions about the economy.

Swiftonomics is a term that denotes the economic impact of this young star. In 2023, Swift launched The Eras Tour, a global concert series with total revenue estimated at over one billion dollars, and the tour is not yet finished. Swift has thus made history with the highest-grossing tour ever, surpassing big names like Elton John and Beyonce. The tour is also credited with boosting the local economy across the U.S. and positively impacting the global economy.

World’s Highest-Grossing Extravaganza

The average ticket price on Ticketmaster, the ticket sales and distribution platform, for The Eras Tour is $254, which means Swift has earned over $300 million after just one concert out of a total of 22, according to Bloomberg.

The tour earns not only from fans but also from sponsors and merchandise available at the concert. Fans spend over $1,300 on tickets, travel, accommodation, and clothing they will wear especially on the day of the concert. Last year, at the end of July, Swift further elevated her status in the eyes of her loyal followers and the rest of the world when she decided to share the earnings with her team, allocating $55 million in bonuses for dancers, sound technicians, and truck drivers who all contributed equally to ensuring the tour went smoothly. This has set a standard for many other performers and employers who owe their success to a number of people involved in the realization of a project.

Swiftonomics – The Economy of Taylor Swift

It seems that Taylor Swift could significantly impact the American and global economy after the COVID-19 pandemic, during which household incomes peaked, but on the other hand, tourism suffered significant losses. In this almost perfect moment, The Eras Tour followed. Ticketmaster crashed in 2022 due to an overwhelming demand for concert tickets.

One study showed that the average costs for those who decide to be part of The Eras Tour amount to $2,327.74. The tour generates five billion dollars, thus filling the U.S. treasury. The U.S. Travel Association claims that the figure could be even closer to ten billion dollars when all other indirect costs are included. With her visits to host cities, Swift not only affects their economy but also that of surrounding areas.

For example, although New Zealand was not on the list of places where concerts would be held as part of the tour, Air New Zealand confirmed that they added over 2,000 additional seats on their flights to accommodate the so-called “Swift surge” after the singer announced her arrival in Australia.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau asked Swift via the X app (formerly Twitter) to hold a concert in Canada, which she did. According to Bloomberg’s analysis, Taylor Swift’s net worth is $1.1 billion as of October 2023, making her the second richest self-made woman in the American music industry, right behind the equally famous singer Rihanna.

Controversy Over the Concert in Singapore

On March 2 of this year, Swift began her Southeast Asia tour with the first and only stop in Singapore. The singer held a total of six concerts at the National Stadium, with the last one on March 9. Each concert lasted about three hours during which over 368,000 visitors enjoyed performances by their favorite pop star.

Many expressed their discontent with the decision to hold all six concerts exclusively in Singapore, even though it is a Southeast Asia tour. The Singaporean government signed a contract with the concert organizers to ensure that the city-state would be the only place where Swift would perform. Neighboring countries expressed dissatisfaction with this decision. Srettha Thavisin, the Prime Minister of Thailand, claimed during a business forum in Bangkok held on February 16 that Singapore paid Taylor Swift three million dollars per concert on the condition that she only performs in their country. Despite the objections, all six concerts sold out, and over 300,000 people filled the stadium.

According to estimates by economists at Maybank, 70 percent of visitors flew in from overseas, spending up to 370 million dollars. Between March 1 and 9, while Swift was in the city, Singapore’s incoming flights increased by 186 percent, and the demand for accommodation nearly quintupled, noted Edmund Ong, the general director of the travel platform Trip.com in Singapore.

Such large, global music events are a perfect opportunity for Singapore’s tourism-based services. Fans from Singapore, Thailand, China, and other countries in the region spent large amounts of money on concert tickets and flights. GDP per capita in the Philippines is about $3,500 annually, according to the World Bank. In comparison, Singapore is one of the world’s richest places where the average person earns nearly 23 times more, with a GDP per capita of $83,000. The Singaporean currency is one of the strongest in Asia, which automatically means higher spending for tourists.

Who are the Chiefties

In September 2023, superstar of the American football team Kansas City Chiefs, Travis Kelce, confirmed his romantic relationship with Swift when she was first seen at a game enthusiastically cheering for the team Kelce plays for. This led to the intertwining of Swifties, the accepted name for the fanbase of the singer, with the world of American football.

The Chiefs’ Facebook profile had about 2.1 million followers at the beginning of September 2023 before Swift’s appearance at the game later that month. The page gained an additional 400,000 followers after the pop star was seen in the stands. Female viewership of the National Football League (NFL) in 2023 during the regular season was nine percent and has been approximately that since last year.

The change in the structure and quantity of the audience was felt almost immediately after Taylor Swift’s appearance, which was also noticed by Travis Kelce’s mother, Donna Kelce. The Taylor Swift effect has thus taken root in the realm of American football. The increase in female viewership of the NFL varies by age. Among teenage girls, viewership increased by 53 percent. Viewership for the age group of 18 to 24 years increased by 24 percent. Even without the additional female audience, NFL viewership has risen, as has the number of sponsors, whose percentage has climbed to 20 percent.

According to NBC Sports, the game the Chiefs played in October against the New York Jets attracted 27 million viewers across platforms, the highest number since February 2023 when Super Bowl LVII was held, during which the Chiefs won. According to Apex Marketing, Swift effectively generated an additional $331.5 million in brand value for the Chiefs and the NFL.

However, it is not only the NFL that profits from the Taylor Swift effect. Brands associated with Swift also benefit from her influence, as Complex, an online pop culture magazine, reported that a week after Swift was seen wearing New Balance 550 sneakers, the brand noticed a 25 percent increase in website visits.

Revenue from these contracts is crucial for the league and the building of a broad network of brands and sponsors that will long-term impact the increase in NFL viewership. Although Swift is not a direct sponsor, the league already has 37 sponsors for the 2023-2024 season. One of them, Gatorade, has been a sponsor for nearly 40 years. The newest addition among sponsors is YouTube, which signed a contract in 2023. Since last year, the NFL has strategically expanded its popularity by collaborating with various fashion brands, especially those associated with musicians.

Super Bowl More Expensive Than Before, But Still in Demand

Ticket prices for this year’s Super Bowl were 70 percent higher compared to last year. The average ticket price is up 300 percent compared to ten years ago. Eight thousand dollars is the average minimum price for one ticket, and some ticket procurement platforms like Ticketmaster do not offer the option to purchase one ticket but a minimum of two. Attending the Super Bowl has thus become a luxury reserved only for the wealthy elite and celebrities. Nevertheless, viewership on television screens and through various platforms still holds large numbers.

Many Super Bowl viewers, as well as NFL fans and supporters, expressed their dissatisfaction with Taylor Swift and her presence at Chiefs games, believing that her presence detracts attention from the game itself. These opinions are not supported by statistics showing that with the musician’s appearance at games, interest in American football only grows.

David Steinberg, director of AI marketing service Zeta Global, stated to CNBC that ratings for the NFL jumped seven percent after Swift attended the first game. At this year’s Super Bowl, the center of attention was not Usher’s halftime concert, but rather Taylor Swift and her enthusiastic cheering with Travis Kelce’s mother.

Before the musician’s first appearance at Chiefs games, Kelce was not even among the top ten most sought-after jerseys for sale. According to the NFL, on September 24, he was among the top five. In recent months, his jersey has topped sales in the United Kingdom, which successfully supports the NFL’s efforts to expand its audience to the rest of the world, especially Europe.
