The Croatian National Bank has received information from citizens about calls from unknown individuals who present themselves as employees of the HNB and ask them to check the serial numbers of their euro banknotes, claiming that the euro banknotes are counterfeit and offering to exchange them. Citizens have also reported phone calls urging them to purchase commemorative euro coins at a price significantly higher than the nominal value.
We emphasize that the Croatian National Bank does not exchange cash in a manner where its employees call citizens to verify data or visit them in their homes to exchange banknotes. Likewise, HNB employees do not call citizens to offer the sale of numismatic issues.
Therefore, we warn citizens that these are frauds, most often targeted at the elderly population. To prevent such forms of fraud, we urge citizens to be cautious and to report these cases to the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Croatia.
