The fact is that the food industry in Croatia and worldwide is increasingly keeping up with trends and consumer needs. While products without lactose, gluten, sugar, as well as vegan and vegetarian variants could only be found in health food stores (or ordered online) a decade ago, they are now more accessible, even mandatory on the shelves of better-stocked retail chains.
The global coffee market, a beverage with which many start their day, is a massive industry generating billions of dollars in revenue annually. The International Coffee Organization, established under the auspices of the United Nations, reports that in November 2023, global coffee exports amounted to 10.61 million bags (with one bag weighing 60 kilograms). According to Expert Market Research, the global coffee market reached approximately 126.38 billion USD in 2022, with a stable CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of 4.82% from 2018 to 2022. Forecasts for the period from 2023 to 2028 indicate that this market could grow at an incredible CAGR of 6.7%, which speaks to the continuous popularity of coffee and its growing demand.
On the other hand, recent statistics show that about 65% of the global population has reduced lactose digestion ability, while just over 1% of the population are vegans, and 22% are vegetarians. Whether due to ethical principles or health, many today pay more attention to healthy living and nutrition. Habits are changing positively, which is why numerous certifications on packaging have recently become a necessity demanded by consumers rather than an exclusivity.
A prime example of how global trends are being followed in Croatia is the renowned domestic manufacturer with a long tradition in the Croatian market – Anamaria Company – a company that recently launched its first line of lactose-free instant mixes suitable for vegans. With additional Kosher and Halal certifications, their new mixes – in the form of classic Cappuccino and 2-in-1 and 3-in-1 beverages – are the result of a special production method that emphasizes animal welfare and does not contain additives that contradict vegan principles.
