According to available data from industry analyst Jato Dynamics, Tesla Model Y is the best-selling car in Europe in 2023. New car registrations in Europe increased by 14 percent year-on-year, meaning that over one million cars were sold across 28 European markets. Interestingly, 15 percent of that total, which means around 150 thousand cars, were battery-powered.
This increase in electric vehicle registrations is mainly the result of sales from Tesla, BMW, and SAIC, according to Jato.
– Increased demand for electric vehicles is more a response to increased supply than to price competitiveness and the variety of available models – says Felipe Munoz, Jato’s global analyst.
Considering data up to November 2023, the Tesla Model Y becomes the best-selling car in Europe, recording 238,907 cumulative sales, jumping 22 places compared to the previous year (+122.9 percent). The Renault Clio follows in second place with 231,170 new registrations (+41.3 percent), and in third is the Dacia Sandero, which recorded a drop of one place, with 221,985 sold (+20.0 percent) and Volkswagen T-Roc with 208,874 sold (+22.3 percent).
In fifth place is the Opel Corsa with 195,786 sold cars (+23.4 percent), followed by the Dacia Duster with 174,525 (+7.8 percent), Lada Granta with 172,584 (+112.3 percent), and Volkswagen Golf with 172,329 registrations (-1.2 percent). The Volkswagen Tiguan took ninth place, and the top ten is closed by the Citroen C3.
Growth of Electric Vehicles
Tesla registrations tripled in October 2023 (compared to October 2022) due to the ongoing sales success of the Tesla Model Y and Tesla Model 3. MG owner SAIC recorded a 66 percent increase in registrations, and sales of the MG 4 were 1.6 times higher than sales of the Volkswagen ID 3.
