The Austrian hotel company Falkensteiner Michaeler Tourism Group (FMTG) has secured a contract for its first hotel in the German market in Grömitz in the Lübeck Bay, one of the oldest resorts on the Baltic Sea. After several interested investors and hoteliers applied for the attractive project, the contract was unanimously awarded to the Austrian hotel group at the end of the year.

FMTG plans to open a family resort in Grömitz, Lübeck Bay, by 2027, which will be their first hotel in Germany and an important next step in the tourist group’s expansion strategy, according to today’s company announcement. Construction is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2025. The Falkensteiner Hotel in Grömitz is the first step, the group states. Further projects in Germany will follow over the next few years.

As is known, FMTG operates in six European countries including Croatia, with a portfolio of 27 four and five-star hotels, three apartment resorts, and a premium campsite. – The well-known resort of Grömitz is a favorite destination for family vacations. Here we see great potential for leveraging synergy in the destination’s offerings. The location in Lübeck Bay is also perfect. Thanks to the proximity of major cities like Hamburg and Berlin, we are addressing completely new target groups that we would like to attract as Falkensteiner guests, says Erich Falkensteiner, Chairman of the Supervisory Board. With the new location on the Baltic Sea, this will now expand throughout Germany.

More Hotels Planned

Otmar Michaeler, CEO of FMTG, reveals that about 25 percent of their guests already come from Germany, including guests staying at their facilities in Croatia.

– Our long-term goal has been to establish ourselves in the German market with our own hotel. With the new location in Grömitz, we can finally implement a successful strategy, managing our own hotels in the domestic markets of our guests. We are thrilled to have secured the contract for this fantastic project and the trust of the municipality of Grömitz in our hotel group. In the medium term, we see five to six new hotels in equally attractive locations in Germany, and we are looking for them in the hotel and premium camping sector, says Michaeler.

The construction project will be realized over the next three years. Above the Grömitz marina, FMTG is developing the Falkensteiner Family Resort as part of the Premium collection with around 130 rooms, apartments, and flats. The family product is complemented by a high-quality food and beverage concept and a spa area, and the hotel concept is tailored to children, without neglecting the needs for relaxation and leisure of the parents. Spacious family and children’s areas, a diverse entertainment program with an educational approach, childcare, and a section just for parents are planned.

– The demands and expectations of families on vacation have significantly changed and are becoming increasingly higher. Additionally, there is a growing demand for family vacations in the luxury hotel segment. We are certainly pioneers in this niche in Europe and have already successfully implemented innovative family projects in Austria, Italy, and Croatia, explains Falkensteiner.

Last Year a Hotel Opened in Austria

– With FMTG and its very clear positioning within the family target group, we are getting a completely new hotel product in Grömitz that has not been seen before on the German Baltic Sea coast, says Manfred Wohnrade, head of the Grömitz tourist office.

Falkensteiner reminds that last January they opened the 5-star Hotel Montafon in Vorarlberg, Austria, a hotel fully adapted for families and considered the leading project of the group. The hotel is not only the only family hotel in Europe that is a member of Leading Hotels of the World, but it was also named Hotel Property of the Year in 2023.
