Last night, the second Winter auction of the Artmark auction house took place in the Grand Hall of the Sheraton Hotel in Zagreb. A total of 126 lots were offered during the nearly three-hour auction, combining Croatian classical and modern art, as well as a Christmas selection dedicated to jewelry and watches.
Total sales exceeded 200,000 euros with approximately 55 percent of lots sold.
The highlights of the auction included some of the most important works of Croatian classical art; for example, the masterpiece by Emanuel Vidović ‘Chioggia – Canale della Vena’ sold for 22,000 euros. This is a record transaction for any work by Emanuel Vidović in Croatia and the second highest in public sales of Vidović’s works internationally.
Lot 37, an oil on canvas by Vlaho Bukovac – ‘Study for Icarus’ achieved a final price of 17,000 euros. Works by prominent representatives of Croatian modern art, Bela Čikoš Sesija and Mencius Clement Crnčić, also achieved significant sales. Lot 15, ‘The Painter’s Villa in Novi Vinodolski’ by Clement Crnčić was sold for 10,000 euros, while Čikoš’s work ‘Four Archangels’ (lot 88) achieved an excellent price of 8,000 euros.
Several other works by prominent names in Croatian art reached record amounts. Marijan Detoni and his ‘Tamburaši’ – lot 38 were sold for a record 8,500 euros. For the works of Ivan Rabuzin, very interesting ‘battles’ were fought among bidders in the hall, as well as those bidding online and by phone. Lot 2 by Ivan Rabuzin and his ‘Winter Landscape’ reached a price of 6,500 euros after 15 bidding steps, while lot no. 27 Slakovi achieved an excellent price of 7,000 euros.
