The European Union has reached an agreement on new rules for the migration and asylum system, said Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, in a statement on the social platform X on Wednesday.

“The EU has achieved a historic agreement on a new set of rules for managing migration and asylum,” Metsola said.

To better control migration flows to Europe, a faster, more efficient data collection procedure is being introduced at external borders with new harmonized checks, according to a statement from Croatian MEP Karlo Ressler, who participated in the negotiations on the Migration Pact, five legislative acts aimed at modernizing the European migration and asylum system.

“This is a key decision of the mandate. The comprehensive package of five legislative acts will allow us to reduce migration pressure towards Croatia and Europe, increase legal certainty, and regain control over European borders,” Ressler said.

He emphasized that “the fight against illegal migration will be further strengthened by a significantly improved biometric system that will enable the identification of individuals posing a security threat.”

The scope of the common European biometric database of illegal migrants and asylum seekers is being expanded for better insight, cooperation, and detection of individuals posing a security risk, and mechanisms for crisis management are also being established, the statement added.

“A comprehensive approach to migration and asylum links effective border protection, more order and faster procedures, stronger efforts against smuggling and abuses, as well as partnerships with third countries,” the statement emphasizes.

After the European Commission presented a new proposal for the Migration and Asylum Pact in 2020, lengthy political negotiations followed on one of the most controversial issues in European policy.

The regulations are expected to be adopted at the plenary session of the European Parliament in April and will shape the European migration and asylum system in the years to come, the statement adds.
