Not even a week after he was removed from the position of CEO by the management of OpenAI, the creator of the popular artificial intelligence tool ChatGPT, he was dismissed from the position of CEO, Sam Altman is back at his old job starting today. OpenAI announced on X that they have ‘reached a preliminary agreement for Sam Altman to return to OpenAI as CEO.’ However, with a new board now consisting of Bret Taylor (Chair), Larry Summers, and Adam D’Angelo.

On Friday, OpenAI’s management dismissed Altman because, as they stated, he ‘was not honest in his communication with the board,’ but they did not specify what exactly they meant by that. In the meantime, Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft (the company that has invested over $13 billion in OpenAI), announced that Altman is joining Microsoft as the head of their artificial intelligence research team.
It didn’t take long for Altman himself to speak out on X. He emphasized that he ‘loves OpenAI’ and that everything he has done over the past few days was to keep his team together. When he decided to join Microsoft, Altman wrote, he believed it was the best path for him and his team. However, with the new board and with Nadella’s support, he looks forward to ‘returning to OpenAI and building a strong partnership with Microsoft.’
