The elected president of Argentina, ultraliberal economist Javier Milei, announced in his victory speech the ‘renewal of Argentina’ and, as a proponent of shock therapy, warned that there would be no half-measures.
– A historic night for Argentina – Milei told thousands of his supporters at the election headquarters in Buenos Aires.
Milei won in the second round of elections on Sunday with 55 percent of the votes against the Minister of Economy (center) Sergio Massa.
– This is the end of a model that impoverishes the caste; today we accept the model of libertarianism to become a world power again. We are faced with enormous problems such as inflation, stagnation, lack of jobs, insecurity, poverty, and misery, said the newly elected president of Argentina. We can only solve these problems if we embrace new ideas of freedom. There is no room for gradual measures, for lukewarmness and half-measures – warned Milei, who has been advocating shock therapy for an economy ravaged by chronic inflation, which has risen to 143 percent.
He extended a hand of cooperation to all Argentinians and ‘political leaders who wish to join the new Argentina,’ but also warned those who might resist reforms.
– There are people who will resist, who will want to maintain a system of privileges that benefits a minority but impoverishes the majority. I tell them: everything that is legal is allowed, but nothing is allowed outside the law – he said.
Javier Milei will assume the presidency on December 10 and succeed the current Peronist (left-center) Alberto Fernandez.
Milei’s opponent Sergio Massa conceded defeat, and President Fernandez said he ‘believes he can start working with Javier Milei to ensure an orderly transition.’
