The European Commission today decided to send a reasoned opinion to Croatia for failing to comply with EU rules on ensuring an effective system for monitoring, control, and inspection of Croatian bluefin tuna farms.

The Commission sent an official warning to Croatia in February 2022, identifying serious deficiencies in monitoring the transfer and cage placement of bluefin tuna. Furthermore, Croatia has not ensured cross-checking of all relevant data, investigated possible cases of non-compliance, nor taken administrative or penal measures against those responsible for violations of EU law.

The Commission believes that Croatia has not taken the necessary steps to address the aforementioned deficiencies. Croatia has a period of two months to respond to the reasoned opinion and take the necessary measures to rectify the identified deficiencies. Otherwise, the Commission may refer the case to the Court of Justice of the European Union.
