Unemployment in Croatia Slightly Increased, Stagnated in Eurozone and EU

Unemployment in the Eurozone and EU stagnated in June, marking the third consecutive month, while in Croatia it slightly increased, according to the latest estimates from Eurostat released on Tuesday.

In the 20-member Eurozone, the unemployment rate measured by the International Labour Organization (ILO) methodology was 6.4 percent in June, remaining at the same level as in the previous two months, as calculated by statisticians who revised the May data.

In the EU, it was 5.9 percent and also remained at the same level as in April and May.

Compared to last June, it is lower by 0.3 percentage points in the Eurozone and by 0.2 percentage points in the EU, as shown in Eurostat tables.

Statisticians estimate that in the EU in June, 12.8 million citizens were unemployed, of which 10.81 million were in the Eurozone.

Monthly comparisons show that the number of unemployed in the EU decreased by two thousand in June, while in the Eurozone it decreased by 62 thousand. Compared to last June, it is lower by 387 thousand in the Union and by 441 thousand in the Eurozone.

Croatia Slightly Above Average

Spain and Greece remain the only countries with double-digit unemployment rates, which reached 11.7 and 11.1 percent in June, respectively.

In Croatia, the unemployment rate measured by the ILO methodology in June was 6.8 percent, which is 0.2 percentage points higher than in the previous three months.

In June 2022, it was 6.9 percent, as shown in the tables.

According to Eurostat data, 122 thousand citizens were unemployed in Croatia in June, which is four thousand more than in May. Compared to the same month last year, their number decreased by four thousand, as shown in the tables.

Estonia had the closest unemployment rate to Croatia in June, at 6.6 percent.

Malta recorded the lowest unemployment rate at 2.6 percent. The Czech Republic and Poland followed closely with 2.7 percent, and Germany with 3 percent.

Slight Decrease in Youth Unemployment

In the age group up to 25 years, the unemployment rate in the Eurozone decreased in June to 13.8 percent, down from 14 percent in May.

In the EU, it increased from 14.0 to 14.1 percent.

Compared to last June, it is lower by 0.9 percentage points in the Eurozone and by 0.4 percentage points in the EU, as shown in Eurostat tables.

Statisticians estimate that in the EU in June, nearly 2.7 million young people were unemployed, of which just over 2.2 million were in the Eurozone.

Croatia Close to 20 Percent

Among the EU countries for which Eurostat had data, Slovenia recorded the lowest youth unemployment rate in June at 5.6 percent.

Germany followed with 6.1 percent, Ireland with 7.4 percent, and the Netherlands with 8.3 percent.

The highest rate in June was in Spain, where it was 27.4 percent. It exceeded 20 percent in Greece, Sweden, and Italy, according to Eurostat data.

Croatia, along with Belgium, Cyprus, Slovenia, and Romania, is not required to submit monthly data on youth unemployment.

In the second quarter, Croatia recorded a youth unemployment rate of 19 percent, with 25 thousand young people unemployed.

The estimate for the first quarter was raised to 19.5 percent, which is 2.1 percentage points higher than the Eurostat data published in early May. In the first three months of this year, 26 thousand young people were unemployed, according to Eurostat’s report.
