The Departure of the Most Popular Bird: Twitter Changes Logo to X

As part of a corporate rebranding that comes at a time when Twitter is struggling to attract advertisers and facing increased competition, Elon Musk plans to completely replace Twitter’s iconic bird logo with the ‘X’ symbol. Announcing the change this weekend, Musk stated that we will ‘soon say goodbye to the Twitter brand and, gradually, all birds.’

The owner of Twitter has already made significant changes to Twitter since purchasing it last fall, changing the company’s name to X Corp, and has repeatedly expressed his plan to create a comprehensive application under the ‘X’ brand.

The new CEO of Twitter Linda Yaccarino, who took over the company in May, presented her vision for the ‘X’ brand at a meeting with marketing professionals in California this weekend. She invited attendees to collaborate on news regarding Twitter and announced the introduction of changes in the coming weeks.

Specifically, the company plans to transition from the current text-dominant model to a multimedia model, integrating more audio and video features, all to attract advertisers and establish partnerships with television networks.

Yaccarino also stated, according to the Financial Times, that the social network, in collaboration with Musk’s new AI company xAI, plans to integrate artificial intelligence into its services.

Stating that X is ‘the future of unlimited interactivity’ centered around sound, video, text, as well as digital payments and banking, Yaccarino announced on her Twitter profile that the rebranding of the platform will create a global marketplace for ideas, goods, services, and opportunities.

‒ Driven by artificial intelligence, X will connect us all in ways we are just beginning to imagine ‒ she said.

The Major Challenge is Meta’s Threads

It should be noted that Twitter has been under increasing pressure since Musk completed the acquisition of the company valued at $44 billion in October 2022, which also led to mass layoffs due to cost-cutting. However, in addition to layoffs, Musk has introduced radical changes to the company’s policies that have frustrated both users and advertisers, causing advertising revenues to drop by 50 percent, and the company is on the brink of bankruptcy.

The latest challenge for the once most popular social network came this month when Meta, led by Mark Zuckerberg, launched Threads, the long-awaited competitor to Twitter that gathered ten million users within just seven hours of its launch, as we have already reported in Lider.

Whether the rebranding will help Twitter remains to be seen, but it is interesting that the data Twitter possesses will train Musk’s xAI artificial intelligence model, given that he has, despite collaborating on OpenAI, fiercely criticized artificial intelligence.

Nevertheless, Musk has a significant history of changing his mind after public statements. Earlier this month, for instance, he provoked a strong reaction from users after announcing that the platform would impose temporary limits on the number of posts users can see in order to ‘reduce data collection by third parties for the purpose of training AI chatbots’.

In any case, it seems that artificial intelligence is now also in Twitter’s focus, and this rebranding represents the death of the most popular bird ‘Larry T Bird’, the platform’s logo named after former Boston Celtics player.
