At the end of June, 1.1 percent more employed than a year earlier

At the end of June, there were 1.66 million employed persons in Croatia, which is 1.4 percent more than in May and 1.1 percent more than in June last year, with the registered unemployment rate standing at 5.6 percent, according to data from the Croatian Bureau of Statistics (DZS).

According to DZS data, in June there were 1,657,680 employed persons in Croatia, which is an increase of 22,300 or 1.4 percent compared to the end of May this year, and 1.1 percent more on an annual basis.

In legal entities, there were 1,421,296 employed persons in June this year, which is a monthly increase of 0.9 percent or 12,042 persons, and an increase of 0.8 percent compared to June last year.

According to data that DZS obtains from the Croatian Pension Insurance Institute, there were 218,012 employed persons in crafts and liberal professions at the end of June, which is an increase of 10,215 or 4.9 percent compared to May. On an annual basis, the number of employed in crafts and liberal professions was higher by 3.2 percent.

At the same time, the number of employed insured farmers, of which there were 18,372 at the end of June, remained the same on a monthly basis, while it fell by 1.4 percent on an annual basis.

More detailed statistics on the number of employed in legal entities show that out of 19 areas of activity for which DZS publishes data, 10 employed more workers at the end of June than at the end of the same month last year, with the highest percentage increase recorded in information and communications, by 5.7 percent, to 57,786, in real estate business by 4.8 percent, to 9,867, and in the activity of providing accommodation and preparing and serving food, i.e., hospitality and tourism, by 4.4 percent, to 94,879 employed.

The sectors with the largest number of employees are manufacturing and wholesale and retail trade, with the number of employees in manufacturing decreasing by 0.7 percent on an annual basis, to 230,922 workers, while in trade it increased by 0.8 percent, to 215,461 employed.

On a monthly basis, the largest increase in employment was in hospitality and tourism, by 10.7 percent.

The number of unemployed increased by one percent on a monthly basis

According to data that DZS obtains from the Croatian Employment Service (HZZ), at the end of June 2023, there were 98,709 registered unemployed persons in the records of the service, which is an increase of 951 persons or one percent compared to May this year.

The registered unemployment rate, which is calculated as the ratio of unemployed to the total active population, was 5.6 percent in June, the same as in May, according to DZS data.

On an annual basis, the number of unemployed has decreased by 6.7 percent.
