Goodbye Privacy: The United Kingdom Wants to Break End-to-End Encryption

Mark Zuckerberg is in conflict with the government of the United Kingdom over ongoing plans to implement a ‘super secure’ messaging system across all its applications despite a potential significant law that could effectively ban this technology. Governments around the world, which also oppose this popular technology, are closely monitoring the standoff to see who will blink first.

‘End-to-end encryption’ and ‘client-side scanning’ are part of a technology that sounds very complicated, but at the end of the day, it all boils down to a very simple question: should tech companies have the ability to read users’ private messages?

This question is at the heart of a dispute that has been brewing for years between Silicon Valley and the governments of a dozen countries around the world.

WhatsApp, iMessage, Android Messages, and Signal already use ‘end-to-end’ encryption, and this technology means that only the sender and recipient can read messages, view videos or photos, and hear phone calls. Not even the app developers can access the content of conversations.

Most governments and security agencies accepted the rise of this technology until four years ago when Zuckerberg announced on stage the introduction of this technology on Messenger as well as on Instagram.

‒ ‘We will enable more than two billion people around the world to talk privately to each other,’ he said.

The owner of Facebook has since been slowly and quietly continuing with the project, and Meta continues to refuse to discuss how the implementation of this technology is progressing and when ‘end-to-end’ will come into effect.

In the meantime, calls to stop the transition to ‘end-to-end’ encryption are becoming increasingly louder.

Hunting for Illegal Material

Authorities in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United States, India, Turkey, Japan, and Brazil, in collaboration with agencies such as Interpol, have criticized this technology, but none have yet passed a law that would hinder these popular applications, at least for now.

Forcing tech companies to build some kind of technology that would allow scanning messages in search of illegal material is one of the central principles of a comprehensive internet safety law in the United Kingdom that could be adopted in the near future.

According to reports by the BBC, the British government believes that ‘end-to-end’ encryption will be ‘a boon for anyone who wants to harm a child.’

This week, the British National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children released survey results suggesting that the public wants police officers to have access to messages to protect children.

Of the 1,723 adults surveyed in the United Kingdom, 73 percent said that tech companies should, by law, scan private messages in search of child sexual abuse.

Out of Sight…

In response to the survey, a Meta spokesperson stated that the company has ‘developed security measures that prevent, detect, and enable us to take action against this heinous abuse.’

This week, 68 prominent security and privacy researchers also published a letter claiming that the Online Safety Bill in the UK would effectively break ‘end-to-end’ encryption.

The bill places the burden on companies to find a way to implement safety measures for children while preserving user privacy, but experts claim that this is impossible.

WhatsApp and Signal have meanwhile stated that they would prefer to remove their services from the United Kingdom rather than degrade the security of ‘end-to-end’ encryption.

To make matters worse for critics of the technology, Elon Musk announced in May that he is also implementing ‘end-to-end encryption in messages on Twitter.

After years of scandals over the use of private data, tech companies consider this technology crucial for rebuilding trust in their services. And of course, this type of encryption greatly simplifies moderation for companies because if they cannot see what users are sharing, then they cannot control it.
