Example of 5G Monetization: Will This Network Become Mainstream?

Just as we could not have predicted the technology we use daily today twenty years ago, it is also difficult to imagine what will be possible with the further development of technology in the future. However, experts from Ericsson Nikola Tesla have shown that there are indeed ways in which new technology, such as the 5G network, will be used daily in the future, by presenting interesting innovations and insights from one of the leading technological events – the recently held Mobile World Congress in Barcelona at the Zagreb headquarters of ENT.

What 5G currently brings us as end users, and what it will enable in the future, was explained by Hrvoje Hadžić, responsible for strategy and business development at ENT. He highlighted the greatest advantage of the 5G network as the ability for remote monitoring of conditions and quality in, for example, factories, while the full potential of this technology brings remote control of vehicles and robots, as well as ‘digital twins’, meaning the interaction of the physical and digital worlds.

Successful Monetization of the 5G Network

One of the more interesting use cases and, importantly, monetization of the 5G network is certainly the viewing of sports matches and races or, alternatively, the streaming of music concerts without ‘lag’. Last year, Singaporean telecom Singtel, in collaboration with Ericsson, provided Formula 1 fans with a better user experience of streaming the local race using the 5G network and the so-called ‘slicing’ technology, being the first in the world to do so. Subscribers to Singtel’s mobile video application were able to enjoy live streams of the race on-site via a dedicated 5G network for the price of a premium package of 10 Singapore dollars, which is about seven euros. As a result, in the third quarter of 2022, Singtel saw a 28 percent increase in users compared to the second quarter of 2022. It is also important to note that Asian countries are, in fact, very advanced in the development and application of 5G compared to European companies and users.

Although this is just the beginning of the application of 5G technology and no one can predict whether the example of the Singapore F1 race will become a sort of mainstream or simply fade away due to lack of interest, it will be interesting to observe the further development and investments in 5G technology, as well as its practical application.

Numerous other experts from ENT demonstrated examples of innovations in other technological areas such as 5G SA networks, open APIs, exposure, NR networks, energy efficiency, microwave solutions, OSS/BSS, and 5G private networks, as well as smart solutions in the field of sustainability. They conclude that investing in 5G is quite risky and that large companies are the ones making that decision.
