A federal judge has sentenced Ishan Wahi, a former product manager at Coinbase, to 24 months in prison for insider trading based on privileged information.
At a hearing held on May 9 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, Judge Loretta Preska sentenced Wahi to two years in prison for his role in using confidential information he obtained during his time at Coinbase to profit from new token offerings, totaling up to $1.5 million. Preska ordered Wahi to surrender by June 21 to serve his sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution Fort Dix in New Jersey. After his prison term, he will be subjected to two years of supervised release for each count of the indictment, which will run concurrently.
The former Coinbase employee, along with his brother Nikhil Wahi and associate Sameer Ramani, allegedly used confidential data obtained from Coinbase to profit from new token offerings, totaling over a million dollars. Authorities arrested Ishan and Nikhil in July 2022 while they were attempting to flee the country to travel to India.
Wahi’s attorney argued that in considering the sentencing, the judge should weigh Ishan’s immigration status in the U.S., that it was a non-violent crime, and that he had no criminal record prior to his arrest. Friends and family members, including Wahi’s mother, appeared in court for the sentencing.
