Bitcoin Transaction Fees Exceed Block Rewards for the First Time Since 2017

Amid a recent surge in bitcoin transaction fees, block number 788695 marks a significant milestone for miners. For the first time since 2017, transaction fees in a single block have exceeded the block rewards distributed to miners. Transaction fees in the block amounted to 6.7 bitcoins, surpassing the block reward of 6.25 bitcoins.

Although this surge in fees has made it difficult for ordinary users, this block demonstrates how it benefits bitcoin miners, a global network of volunteers running specialized computers to secure the bitcoin blockchain.

Bitcoin miners have two built-in sources of revenue. One is the block reward. Approximately every 10 minutes, miners are awarded 6.25 bitcoins. This value is halved every four years in an event known as halving.

The second source is transaction fees. Users can optionally designate a fee for each bitcoin transaction. If there is higher demand for bitcoin, users must increase their fee if they want to get their transaction processed in a timely manner. Recently, there has been high demand, with the average fee hovering around $19 according to the statistics website BitInfoCharts.

As such, the source of revenue from transaction fees somewhat unpredictably varies with demand.

One reason why bitcoiners consider this increase in fees so monumental is that eventually, in over a hundred years, transaction fees will be the only source of income for miners. However, transaction fees fluctuate so frequently that it has yet to be proven that they will provide a consistent source of income when that time finally comes.

Miners are the backbone that holds bitcoin together. The higher the hash rate provided by miners securing bitcoin, the more secure bitcoin is. But miners are unlikely to secure the network if they are not compensated for it. Therefore, it could be detrimental for bitcoin if transaction fees do not increase over the years.

Block 788695 is a small, optimistic sign that fees could increase, even if it has not yet proven to be a consistent source of miner revenue.
