Average Price of Agricultural Land Lease Only 74 Euros Per Year

With an average price of 74 euros for the annual lease of one hectare of pure agricultural land, excluding buildings and plantations, Croatia ranks near the bottom in the European Union. A hectare of arable land can only be leased cheaper in Slovakia, at an average price of 62 euros per year, according to Eurostat data for 2021.

The most expensive agricultural land lease in Croatia is in the City of Zagreb, amounting to 109 euros per year. This is followed by the northern Croatia region with a price of 90 euros, then Adriatic Croatia (77 euros), while the lowest lease amount is in the Pannonian Croatia area (72 euros). According to previously published Eurostat data, the average price of a hectare of agricultural land in Croatia in 2021 was 3661 euros, making it the cheapest in the EU.

The most expensive agricultural land lease in Europe is in the Netherlands, averaging 836 euros per hectare per year. However, there are dramatic differences between individual regions in that country, with the Flevoland region holding the European record for lease price at an astonishing 1721 euros, which is no surprise as it also has the highest price per hectare for sale – over 141 thousand euros! The second highest agricultural land lease amount in the EU pertains to the Italian region of Friuli Venezia Giulia (1714 euros), the third to the Spanish Canary Islands (1119 euros), and the fourth to the Greek Attica (927 euros).

In contrast, lease prices were lowest in two Swedish regions, Mellersta Norrland and Övre Norrland (both 25 euros), and in the Slovak region of Východné Slovensko (42 euros). Interestingly, the price of a hectare of arable land in Övre Norrland in the year before last was a high 1882 euros.

According to Eurostat data, the lease of permanent grassland is cheaper across Europe than the lease of arable land. The lease price for a hectare of permanent grassland in 2021 ranged from a low average of 39 euros in Slovakia to an average of 337 euros in Ireland.
