Bill Gates: Artificial Intelligence Will Transform Agriculture, Healthcare, and Education System

Technology leaders have recently been frequently thinking and discussing artificial intelligence, especially due to the current focus on the development of chatbots and the implementation of artificial intelligence in social networks, platforms, and business tools.

Co-founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates, has often shared his thoughts on this topic, and this week he decided to put his thoughts on paper. More precisely, on seven pages.

In the text ‘The Age of Artificial Intelligence Has Begun’, Gates presented his views on the future of artificial intelligence. His letter was released on the same day as Google’s chatbot Bard, which joins Microsoft’s Bing in the race for the best AI tool, and just a week after OpenAI announced the long-awaited evolution of its chatbot, namely GPT-4.

Gates has previously spoken about his excitement regarding the future of artificial intelligence, specifically how it could be used as a mentor in education or to provide medical advice to people when doctors are not easily accessible.

Already Announced Integration of AI into Office Suite

The billionaire confirmed his concerns about artificial intelligence in the letter, including the risk that people will misuse it, as well as the possibility of superintelligent or ‘strong’ artificial intelligence that could ‘set its own goals’ as the technology of artificial intelligence improves over time.

He also elaborated on ideas about how artificial intelligence can be used as a tool to enhance human productivity, specifically, using it as a ‘digital personal assistant’ in business. This is an idea he had already discussed in February, but this time he added that AI could help improve global inequalities both in the workplace and in healthcare or education.

Microsoft has already announced the integration of AI into the Office suite, and Gates referred to these tools as ‘personal agents’ equipped with vast knowledge and data not only about the company the user works for but also about the entire sector.

– As computing power becomes cheaper, GPT’s ability to express ideas will increasingly resemble white-collar workers who will assist you with various tasks – Gates states.

Regarding healthcare, the Microsoft co-founder wrote that artificial intelligence can free healthcare workers from certain tasks, such as filing insurance claims, completing paperwork, and compiling notes from medical visits.

This is a significant advantage, he notes, for impoverished countries where ‘many people never see a doctor’, as artificial intelligence could enable healthcare workers to be more productive and help treat patients who do not live near healthcare facilities.

AI is already being used in healthcare for analyzing medical data and drug design, Gates wrote, but the next wave of tools could help predict drug side effects and calculate dosage levels.

AI Tools Should Be Available to All Schools

For crops and livestock in poor countries, Gates wrote that artificial intelligence could help design seeds tailored to the local climate and develop vaccines for livestock, which could be particularly important ‘as climate change puts even more pressure on farmers’.

Gates also predicted that artificial intelligence could transform education in the next five to ten years by delivering content tailored to students’ learning styles, as well as learning what motivates individual students and causes them to lose interest in subjects. In doing so, it could also assist teachers in planning lessons and grading.

– Even when the technology is perfected, learning will still depend on good relationships between students and teachers. It will improve, but never replace, the work that students and teachers do together in the classroom – he explains.

Certainly, he states that AI tools should be equally available to all schools both in the U.S. and around the world, so that no one is left behind, and teachers must adapt to students who use it when completing school assignments. He cited the example of teachers allowing students to use Chat GPT to write the first draft of an essay, which they would then have to personalize.

– To make the most of this extraordinary new technology, we will need to protect ourselves from risks and expand the benefits to as many people as possible – Gates wrote.
