While some build campuses for their companies, Elon Musk has decided to build his own city. According to the Wall Street Journal, Musk’s associates are reportedly in the process of purchasing thousands of acres of land in Texas with the hope of establishing a city where employees of his companies can live and work.
At least 3,500 acres have been purchased near the city of Austin where work has begun on a city that will be called ‘Snailbrook’, which is, according to the Journal, an obvious reference to the mascot of Musk’s company Boring Company.
The report cites county documents and other land records, as well as city and county electronic mail, internal company communications, state permit records, and conversations with landowners and city officials.
Over the years, tech companies have offered numerous benefits to employees through the construction of their own campuses to encourage, among other things, longer working hours. By building his own city, Musk could take this approach even further.
Relocation Already Announced
According to the report, Musk wants employees at his companies Boring Company, Tesla, and SpaceX, whose manufacturing facilities are near Austin, to ‘be able to live in new homes with below-market rent.’ Snailbrook is expected to have more than a hundred homes, pools, and sports fields. The establishment of the city could give Musk, who is known for conflicts with state and federal regulators, a better perspective on the processes and procedures of local authorities.
