Situated along the western coast of India, the state of Gujarat boasts a coastline that stretches 1,600 kilometers, the longest in the country. Additionally, it contributes around 20 percent to India’s industrial production and merchandise exports, with its ports handling about 40 percent of the total Indian cargo.
Pharmaceutical Industry Hub
Gujarat’s pharmaceutical industry significantly contributes to the state’s economy, accounting for one-third of India’s total pharmaceutical production despite the state covering only six percent of India’s territory. A wide range of medicines is produced there, with considerable attention given to research and development of new pharmaceutical products.
Gujarat was at the forefront during the coronavirus pandemic, when pharmaceutical companies in the state played a crucial role in producing essential medicines and medical equipment, as well as in the development of vaccines and treatments for the disease caused by the virus. The state government supports the pharmaceutical industry by providing various incentives such as tax breaks, subsidies, and other benefits to encourage investment in the sector, and various pharmaceutical parks and clusters have been established to ensure a conducive environment for industry growth.
Gujarat is also a major agricultural powerhouse, with over 50 percent of its territory considered net arable land. Cotton, peanuts, dates, sugarcane, milk, dairy, and many other food products are cultivated there.
