French car manufacturer Renault and its Japanese partner Nissan Motor announced on Monday that they intend to invest 600 million dollars in the production of six new vehicle models in India, including two electric-powered ones.
As part of a new long-term vision for India, the companies plan to increase production and intensify research and development, incorporate electric vehicle plants and platforms, and ensure net carbon neutrality.
The announced initial investment will support new projects that are expected to create 2,000 new jobs at the Renault Nissan Automotive India (RNAIPL) factory in Chennai.
The Renault-Nissan center will become an international export hub, focused on new Indian and international projects, the statement said.
The plant in Chennai will design and produce three new models for each company, on the shared platforms of the Renault, Nissan, and Mitsubishi alliance, while preserving the distinctive style of the three brands.
The six new models will include four SUVs and two electric vehicles, the first Renault and Nissan cars of their kind in India. The new models will be marketed in both Indian and foreign markets.
