Creative Savings: Americans Buy Pigs and Chickens and Let Their Hair Go Natural

Although a recession has not been officially declared, American consumers are certainly feeling the effects of negative economic trends – companies (especially in the tech sector) have laid off hundreds of thousands of people, savings are dwindling, and interest rates and prices are rising uncontrollably. Americans, writes the Wall Street Journal, are struggling to keep up with inflation and are resorting to some very creative ways to save.

For instance, journalists have noted an increase in demand for – pigs and chickens. Those who have the means are increasingly opting to raise their own meat and are steering clear of butcher shops. In Southern California, farmers have reported an increase in demand for chickens, which inexperienced growers are purchasing in hopes of avoiding buying eggs in stores.

Recession Brunette

There has been an increase in the number of businesses renting out poultry for a certain period, of course, for a modest fee. At the same time, as Business Insider writes, demand for tattooing and ‘piercing’ services is slowing down, and more and more customers are canceling scheduled treatments – they will probably get tattooed when better economic times come.

Additionally, inflation has impacted women’s hairstyles. Just as the recession gave rise to the phrase ‘red rose effect’ (women save on clothing but indulge themselves and boost morale by buying a red rose), the current economic instability has spurred a trend called ‘recession brunette.’ Hair salons have reported an increase in requests for darker, warmer shades that are more natural, easier to maintain, and require fewer trips to the hairdresser.

This is not the first time a recession has spurred a new trend in the world of hairstyles. The so-called ombre – darker roots and lighter tips – became popular precisely due to the recession of 2008. In any case, the return of blondes will, it seems, be an indicator of better economic opportunities.
